Closing the Deal

Thomas

The meeting went worse than we’d hoped for. It wasn’t like we’d sailed over a waterfall, not yet at least, but the precipice was in sight. I had this dreadful sinking feeling in my gut that I was going to be signing up for welfare checks if I didn’t pull something big out of my hat fast.

There was an unpleasant irony in me sitting in my Armani suit worrying about becoming jobless like my parents, it wasn’t completely lost on me as I nursed my expensive red wine. Normally I’d have seen the humour in my situation, right then I was too intent on keeping my job.

“Seriously… I mean… It could have gone a lot worse couldn’t it.” Jerry ran his fingers through his short cut neat gelled hair and let out a sigh.

“Fox Trot Inc. Basically did everything short of ripping us new arseholes.” I loosened my tie, shuffling back into the big soft sofa, hoping that it would swallow me whole.

“At least you performed worse than I did.” Jerry slapped my arm affectionately and grinned. His usual posh grin nearly masked his worries, but I saw through his cheeky exterior.

Jerry’s tight tailored suit fit him like a glove, revealing the handsome curves of his gym toned body. The elegant glass walls that over looked the pier in the expensive restaurant cast luxurious long rays of light that framed Jerry’s cheeky self-assured grin perfectly. I was always jealous of that look, it made me feel something unusual... An affectionate envy.

“Cheers mate. You’re really making me feel good right now.” I managed a smirk as the alcohol helped to numb my feelings of impending doom. Like a dodgy latte swimming in my tummy, the thought of messing up the deal with Fox Trot didn’t sit well with me.

“Any time buddy.” He sat back and stretched his arms to the sides, his white shirt stretched to reveal his tight muscular chest beneath. Damn! He looked just as strong and masculine as he’d looked since I’d met him during our first year of university. Why hadn’t he aged like me?

“What’s the chance that we will lose our jobs?”

“If we don’t get Fox Trot to sign up? I’d say we are pretty likely to be jobless by Friday.” Jerry chuckled.

It was Wednesday. The unpleasantness in my tummy rumbled me even further.

“Well at least I could move back in with my parents. They’d probably be relieved if I were claiming welfare.” I said it like a joke, but I wasn’t sure how much truth was hidden in that statement. My folks hadn’t worked a day in my life, when I’d gone into financial services they almost died with shock. What could I say? Their poverty had driven me to be as successful as I humanly could be and now with the prospect of all of my hard work being undone by one awkward client, I was not in a happy place.

“If I moved in with my mother, especially if I lost my job, she’d kill me.
